Birken House became home to adventurers of a different kind, Northern Irish transplants Michael and Eileen Keenan. We fell in love with the valley, and a charming old house in need of a little TLC.

With a background in Construction/ Project Management and Architecture it was just the challenge we needed as a weekend retreat…..

…….of course one thing led to another, and before we knew it we were trying to find a way to spend more time in Birken and become more involved in this unique community.

Birken House Bakery is the result- it’s a labour of love; a hobby that became a passion and then a lifestyle.

Tragically, I lost Michael to cancer in 2021,   and for a while the future looked very dark. Fortunately family, friends and neighbours rallied around to help and support me and I can’t imagine anywhere I’d rather be.

‘Sometimes when you are in a dark place, you think you have been buried, but you actually have been planted’.

The bakery has a hand-built outdoor wood fired oven, and bread is our specialty. We use only organic flour, and all our other ingredients are local or organic wherever possible. Many of them come from our own garden or from our neighbours.

Our specialty is traditional three-day sourdough bread, but we also make a range of other breads and baked goods. We like to get to know all our customers and are willing to develop products to meet your needs.

If you want a traditional family bread recipe made for your wedding, a unique corporate gift, or a granola bar that holds up well in a saddlebag on a hot day, we will work with you to make it happen.
